Hemorrhoids occur when any one of the two types of nerves present in the anal cavity are inflamed and swollen due to prolonged friction and pressure around the area. The nerves that are on top of the dentate line are known as visceral ones which cannot feel pain. Therefore, internal hemorrhoids are mostly painless. These nerves feel the pressure of the inflamed vein. The nerves below the dentate line are known as somatic nerves, and are capable of feeling pain. Hence, external hemorrhoids are more irritating and painful.

Symptoms of hemorrhoids commonly include itching, pressure felt due to the swollen vein, trouble while passing stool, blood covered stool due to the rupture of tissue around the anal cavity, mucus secretion and a bulge due to the hemorrhoid being pushed out by pressure.

Pressure on hemorrhoids can result in their protrusion which may result in additional bleeding and mucus secretion. Sometimes it may also lead to leakage of stool from the anal cavity. Doctors distinguish between four stages of hemorrhoid conditions: Bleeding hemorrhoids that do not protrude out of the anal cavity constitute the first stage of this condition. Hemorrhoids that bleed as well as protrude are in the second stage of the problem. However, in such a case, the protruded part of the inflamed vein goes back in on its own over time. Hemorrhoids in the third stage protrude but cannot go back in without being pushed manually, by a finger.

In the fourth stage, hemorrhoids cannot be pushed back in and need to be operated on to put them back in place. In this stage, the condition might also be accompanied by veins clotted with blood due to bleeding over time, known as thrombosed hemorrhoids.

It is not enough to know the symptoms of hemorrhoids and distinguish between the different stages only. One should seek immediate treatment in such cases so that the problem does not aggravate.
